Mannie D Cruz Was Going to Write a Love Song — Then Came «Ese Q-Low (Una Canción de Amor)»
There’s a trap hidden in every good title, and in Mannie D Cruz‘s case, that trap is entirely on purpose. The Washington D.C.-based Latin urban artist will release his new single, «Ese Q-Low (Una Canción de Amor),» on September 30 through his own label, MDC Records, produced by Nexus en el Beat. The track leans into a darker, more sensual side of reggaeton, built around a concept that deliberately plays against the expectations of a traditional love song — something the artist says is baked into the idea from the start.
«The whole idea is the contradiction,» Cruz explains. «Una Canción de Amor sounds romantic, and then Ese Q-Low completely flips it. It’s basically, ‘I was going to write you a beautiful love song… and then I remembered what I really like about you.’ It’s playful, sexy, and doesn’t take itself too seriously.»
That same tension runs through the line that sets up the entire song — «Te iba escribir una canción de amor, pero me acordé de…» — which also shows up in the release’s visual identity, built around deep red lighting, shadows, and a deliberately mysterious, seductive tone. «That’s the exact moment where romance turns into temptation,» Cruz says of the line. «I love the pause, because the listener gets to finish the sentence in their head before the song does it for them. It makes the line funny, seductive, and a little dangerous.»
On the overall mood of the track, he points to a specific era of the genre as a reference point: «I wanted it to feel like nostalgia to that mid-2000s golden era of reggaeton — something you play in the car late, in the club, or when the vibe changes between two people. The beat has space, the lyrics are direct, and the delivery is more intimate. It’s still reggaeton, just with a darker, sensual mood.»
The partnership with Nexus en el Beat
Production once again came from Nexus en el Beat, with whom Cruz had previously worked on the track «Mirala.» «It felt very natural,» he says. «I had the concept, and Nexus helped build the atmosphere around it. We focused on making the production match the attitude of the lyrics instead of just making another reggaeton beat. Again, going for that nostalgic feeling.»
Asked what the producer specifically brings to a session, Cruz doesn’t hesitate: «He brings another set of ears. Sometimes as the artist, you’re too close to the song. Nexus knows when to add something, when to pull something back, and when to just let the record breathe. That perspective makes a big difference.»
From D.C. to Billboard: roots and career
Born and raised in the D.C. area and of Salvadoran descent, Cruz traces much of his sound back to that dual identity. «Growing up in the D.C. area with Salvadoran roots gave me the best of both worlds. I was around hip-hop, R&B, go-go, Caribbean and Latin music — especially cumbia, bachata and merengue. That mix naturally became part of my sound. Reggaeton is already a mash of cultures, and I always wanted to sound authentic without changing its roots, just adding my own twist.»
His entry point into the genre came through albums like Héctor y Tito’s «A la Reconquista,» followed by Don Omar and Zion y Lennox. «The energy pulled me in, how different it all was. Reggaeton is one of those genres where the beat hits and you instantly feel something,» he recalls. Eventually, singing along stopped being enough: «I wanted to tell my own stories. Writing gave me a way to put my personality into the music and escape into my own world.»
That path has included collaborations with Los XL, Jefferson D Lion, Drei Alva, Nexus en el Beat, Kenny Beach, and Madd Maxx of Luminary Sounds, alongside a solo catalog that includes «Una Llamada,» «Te Imagino,» «Chiquitita,» «VITAMINA D,» «Salir,» and the Game Over (Fin del Juego) project. One of the biggest milestones of that career came with «Siente El Calor,» his collaboration with Los XL, which reached No. 6 on Billboard’s Latin Digital Song Sales chart for the week of November 2, 2024.
«It was a huge moment, because it showed me that independent music can really move,» Cruz says of that achievement. «There wasn’t some massive machine behind us. It was organic, and seeing the song reach the Billboard charts gave me confidence — but more than anything, it made me hungry to keep going.»
Asked how he’s changed across that catalog, he points to a steady process of reinvention: «Confidence. I understand my sound and myself as an artist much better now. Every song shows a different side of me, and I’m more comfortable experimenting without feeling like every record has to sound the same. It’s taken me to reinvent myself and become more creative along the way, working across genres like Latin house, guaracha, and reggaeton. Los XL has been a huge influence in that.»
The producer behind the artist
Cruz also works behind the scenes on other projects, something he says feeds directly back into his own music: «It teaches me to listen differently. When you’re working on somebody else’s music, you can be more objective. I bring that same mindset back to my own records now, knowing what the song needs instead of just getting attached to an idea.»
More than a single
Asked what he wants «Ese Q-Low» to do for his career, Cruz points to something bigger than one release: «Of course I want it to stream, chart, and connect with people, but the bigger goal is identity. I want someone to hear this song and understand what Mannie D Cruz brings — melody, personality, sensuality, and a little humor. I’m building something bigger than one record.»
And on what comes next, he’s clear this release is just one stop along the way: «More music, more collaborations, and definitely some surprises. I want to stay consistent and keep showing different sides of myself. Ese Q-Low isn’t the destination — it’s part of the next chapter.»
